Antiretroviral therapy can stop HIV transmission

Medical Network May 7th UNAIDS welcomed the results of a study conducted in Europe on the 3rd. The study further suggests that HIV-infected people do not develop HIV transmission when they receive effective antiretroviral therapy.
The study recruited nearly 1,000 gay couples, one of whom was infected with HIV and the other without. Studies have shown that HIV-infected people do not have viral transmission when they receive effective antiretroviral therapy to suppress viral load.
"This is good news," said Sidibe, executive director of UNAIDS. "HIV-infected people can now be confident that if they receive treatment on a regular basis and suppress viral load, they are not contagious. This provides a strong positive message. It helps to reduce the stigma caused by HIV and improve the self-esteem and self-confidence of infected people."
At the end of the eight-year study, 15 people were confirmed to be infected with HIV. Virus screening shows that these people's infections are not related to HIV-positive partners, but from sexual partners outside the partner.
Researchers estimate that about 472 cases of AIDS were avoided in eight years in the 14 European countries in which the study was conducted.
UNAIDS hopes that this outcome will encourage more people to undergo early testing and take effective treatment. In recent years, the scale of application of antiretroviral therapy has expanded significantly. In 2017, 59% of the 36.9 million people living with HIV were treated, and 47% of them were suppressed.
UNAIDS has emphasized the need for concerted efforts to ensure that all viral-infected people have access to and adhere to effective antiretroviral therapies.
The agency pointed out that there is a high risk of transmission before people understand their HIV status, because the viral load is high in the weeks and months after infection, but if the infected person does not know and accepts Treatment, its viral load will not be inhibited. This suggests that it is important to continue the prevention of the virus, including the use of condoms, and HIV-negative people taking preventive drugs before exposure to the virus.
