Is it a blessing or a curse to surprise new cells in the human immune system?

Release date: 2017-04-25

Scientists have discovered new cell types in the human immune system.

This cell is a new type of white blood cell type called dendritic cells and monocytes. Researchers have identified two new dendritic cell subtypes and two monocytic subtypes. They also discovered a new dendritic cell progenitor cell.

Wellcome-funded researchers use a technique called single-cell genomics to analyze gene expression patterns in individual human blood cells. Previously, for different types of immune cells, research and definition were carried out by a set of marker proteins that they expressed on their surface. This new technology is more powerful and can reveal previously unrecognized and rare cell types that would otherwise be difficult to find.

Dendritic cells display molecules called antigens on their surface. These molecules are recognized by T cells, and then T cells produce an immune response. Monocytes are the largest type of white blood cells that can develop into macrophages and digest fragments in cells.

Divya Shah from the Wellcome Infection and Immunobiology team said: "The two important types of white blood cells in our body - dendritic cells and monocytes - help protect us from infection. In this study, scientists Using cutting-edge technology to discover that there are many more types of cells than we originally thought, the next step is to find out what these cell types can do in our immune system while we are in a state of health and disease.

This study was one of the first major findings in the Human Cell Atlas program released last year. Its findings provide a useful basis for this analysis of other cell types and tissues.
