Australian scientists have recently succeeded in deciphering the protein structure in the milk of the platypus. This unique protein is expected to play an important role in countering super bacteria.

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization published a press release on its official website that as early as 2010, scientists discovered that the platypus's milk has a unique antibacterial property, or is licensed to fight against super bacteria. The agency's researchers collaborated with Dickin University to successfully decipher the structure of the platypus milk protein in the laboratory. This is a unique, previously unseen 3D folded structure of protein that exists only in monopores such as the platypus.

The platypus secretes milk on both sides of the abdomen to feed the cubs. It is reasonable to say that the milk is exposed to the external environment, and the pups are vulnerable to bacteria, but this is not the case. Therefore, the researchers concluded that the platypus milk contains antibacterial protein. New research confirms that the uniquely structured proteins in the platypus milk provide antimicrobial protection for their pups.

Dr. Janet Newman, who participated in the study, said in a press release: "This discovery has increased our understanding of protein structure and provided valuable information for other drug discovery efforts." They will then seek relevant aspects. The collaboration, using the antibacterial properties of this protein, helps develop new drugs or therapies against super bacteria.
