Aspect Biosystems, a Canadian biotechnology company, is a leader in bioprinting and tissue engineering. Yesterday, the company announced a new research collaboration with Johnson & Johnson's subsidiary, healthcare specialist DePuy Synthes Products, which promised to show bioprinting in a new way. They will use Aspect's "Lab-on-a-Printer" bioprinting platform to develop bioprinted knee meniscus for surgical treatment. The meniscus is a type of cartilage that sits between the thighbone and the tibia and serves as a cushioning effect. It can be said to be a "shock absorber" for the knee. It is understood that meniscal tear is one of the most common knee injuries, and its incidence may increase as the population ages. A common treatment for this disease is partial or complete removal of the meniscus. In response to this problem, Aspect and DePuy will use Aspect's bioprinting platform Lab-on-a-Printer to collaborate on the development of a prototype artificial meniscus, which will benefit patients after surgery.
