For the first time in the world: Japan completes retinal transplantation with other iPS cells

Release date: 2017-11-09

According to Japanese media reports, a team composed of the Japanese Institute of Physical Chemistry recently revealed that the first global clinical study on the use of other people's induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells) for retinal cell transplantation to patients with severe eye diseases has been implemented so far. Five transplants were targeted.

According to the team, the first transplant was performed in a man living in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, in March. Currently, all cases are unable to disclose the patient's condition and operation during the observation period of about one year after surgery.

It is said that the team is currently verifying whether the transplanted cells will cause tumor safety and the impact on vision, and the plan will be made public after the verification results are completed. The recruitment of patients in the future is over.

Reports indicate that all cases of transplant surgery are patients with retinal lesions that may lead to blindness in "exudative age-related macular degeneration". The person in charge of the project, Takahashi Masahiro, and others, performed surgery at the Chuo Citizen Hospital of the Kobe City Medical Center and the Osaka University Hospital (Bakuda City, Osaka Prefecture).

It is reported that the advantage of using other iPS cells is that the preparation period is shorter and the cost is lower than using the patient's own cells. The 5 cases of surgery used were special immunological iPS cells with less rejection after transplantation in Kyoto University.

In the transplant procedure, the team injected a solution containing retinal cells made of iPS cells into the patient's eye. Then wait for the cells to attach to the retina.
