This morning, Beijing Food Office clothed five batches of unqualified foods, and the reason for the disqualification was excessive sulfur dioxide.

According to the notification from the Municipal Food and Municipal Office, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Industry and Commerce found five unqualified samples in the sampling of food in circulation in the city. The reason for the failure was sulphur dioxide exceeding the standard. Among the five unqualified foods, sulphur dioxide from Tremella fuciformis supplied by Fujian Gutian Xingyu Edible Fungus Wholesale Co., Ltd. exceeded the standard, reaching the maximum of 19 times the standard value.

According to food experts, sulfur dioxide can maintain a bright color of food, but also inhibit food oxidase, prevent food browning, bleaching agents and preservatives commonly used in food processing. Some manufacturers and distributors catered to the “pursuit of freshness” mentality of consumers and over-bleached the white fungus, resulting in excessive sulphur dioxide residues. Long-term oral intake of sulfur dioxide will stimulate the gastrointestinal tract, causing nausea and vomiting, but also affect calcium absorption, resulting in loss of body calcium.
