China has developed the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection to reduce the incidence of gastric cancer

After 15 years of research, Prof. You Weicheng, Epidemiology Research Department of Peking University Cancer Hospital, demonstrated that the gastric mucosal inflammation caused by Helicobacter pylori infection is an important risk factor for gastric cancer. Eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection can significantly block Precancerous lesions progress and can reduce the incidence of gastric cancer. The research results have been published in the "Journal of the National Cancer Institute of the United States" and the famous British magazine "Digestive Disease."

The research group conducted a multi-factorial intervention study to eradicate Helicobacter pylori infection, vitamin supplements, and taking allicin to block precancerous lesions of gastric cancer for a seven-year risk factor for gastric cancer in the high-risk areas of gastric cancer in Linyi County, Shandong Province. Through up to 15 years of follow-up of the intervention population, it was found that the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection can significantly reduce the incidence of gastric cancer, while taking vitamins and allicin have no significant effect.

Another intervention study used factorial design to evaluate whether the eradication of H. pylori infection, administration of COX-2 inhibitors, or a combination of the two could block the progression of severe precancerous lesions. The results showed that the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection alone or COX-2 inhibitor alone could significantly promote the reversal of precancerous lesions, and the use of COX-2 inhibitors after eradication of H. pylori infection had no significant effect.

The results of these two population-based intervention trials will provide a convincing and important scientific basis for gastric cancer prevention.
