A new way to test lung function: make a call with this app

Release date: 2016-05-12

Scientists have invented a new way to measure lung function, which can be used to assess lung function.

Professor Shwetak Patel of the University of Washington said that SpiroCall (APP) is suitable for all mobile phones. In order to extend the technology to developing countries, they use standard telephone channels instead of the Internet. Many people in developing countries have asthma, cystic fibrosis or other chronic lung diseases.

Patel said: "We hope that any cell phone in the world can test lung function, whether it is a smart phone, a non-smart phone, a wired phone or a pay phone. With SpiroCall, you can make a 800 phone call and blow into the microphone. You can test your lung function."

Lead researcher Mayank Goel said that patients need to take a deep breath and then exhale as quickly as possible. The phone then detects the sound and pressure and sends the data to the central server. The central server will use statistical algorithms to derive your lung function.

"If a person has chronic lung disease, he will be treated for life. So these patients have to learn a convenient way to accurately monitor their lung function, otherwise they have to go to the hospital to test, sometimes have to wait Hours to days."

The program was launched in 2012, when there was only one mobile app called SpiroCall. Since then, the team has received data from more than 4,000 patients in the United States, India, and Bangladesh.

Although the quality of these audios is not very good, the algorithm can reduce errors and improve accuracy. Compared with the hospital's spirometer, the error measured by this method is within 6.2%. This means that the technology meets medical standards. “Different quality phones or phones have different call quality, which will definitely affect the system. But we will test the system regularly to ensure accuracy.”

The team's equipment has not yet been approved by the FDA, and once it has been certified, it can be sold to countries around the world. “Our current clinical trials are based on FDA certification. We hope to begin formal data collection within this year,” Goel said. “Now this technology is very valuable and requires more collaboration.”
